Amman, October 22 (Petra) – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, and Director General of the National Electrical Industries (NEI), Munir Salman El-Ali, signed an agreement on Wednesday to replace traditional lighting units with 27,728 energy-saving LED lamps in the municipalities' streets in the governorates of Jerash, Ajloun, and Mafraq in its second phase.
Talking at the signing ceremony, Kharabsheh emphasized the project's importance in improving the level of street lighting services provided by municipalities, as well as its economic impact on municipal budgets.
The minister added that the project is "one of the largest energy efficiency improvement projects and clearly contributes to reducing carbon emissions and preserving the climate." In turn, Director of the Electricity and Rural Electrification Directorate, Hisham Momani, said the project's total cost amounts to JD4 million, noting implementation will begin at the end of next December for a 1-year period with a seven-year maintenance guarantee.
Momani stated the project's significance lies in providing excellent lighting for municipal streets, reducing electricity bills and carbon emissions, and contributing to the transition to a smart city, as the new units are equipped with a smart-ready system that can control lighting remotely.
The project's first phase was completed at the end of last year, 2024, with 105,000 energy-saving lamps installed on municipal streets in the governorates of Mafraq, Jerash, and Ajloun, at a total cost of JD16 million.
